Shirley Askins

Shirley Askins, age 73, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, August 28, 2018, after a 26 year battle with Multiple Sclerosis. She was born on August 8, 1945 in Sagamore, Pennsylvania and moved to Erie, PA in 1955.  Shirley attended Strong Vincent High School and graduated in 1963.  She was employed by St. Vincent Hospital until she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

Shirley was a strong, caring individual and did not allow a disease to dictate her life.  She devoted her time to her husband and her children, and especially loved spending time with the family. She enjoyed being outside with her flowers and plants and spent many summers at camp with her husband. Shirley's compassion also compelled her to care for rescue dogs throughout her life.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, James and Irene Lucas, and a brother Richard J. Lucas.  She is survived by her husband, Lewis G. Askins; 2 sons, Louis J. Askins and Gary D. Askins; Annette Stover; siblings, Donna Boyd (Jack), Nancy Buziewicz (David), Gregory Lucas (Helen), Gary Lucas, Robert Lucas (Donna), Kathryn Maughn (John), and Karen Burr of Smyrna, TN; 5 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Private services are being held at the family's convenience. Askins Cremation Funeral Services, along with Erie County Memorial Gardens are assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the ANNA Shelter.
