Lewis Askins
Lewis Askins, age 80, of Erie, known to many as “Papa Lou” passed away peacefully on March 24, 2025 in the presence of his loving son Gary Askins and his girlfriend Corrine, and his beloved dog Max, who he cherished
Born on June 22, 1944, Lewis dedicated his life to service both in the military and in his community. Lewis served in the U.S. Army in the 101st Airborne. His military career took him to various parts of the world, including tours in France where he earned numerous citations for his bravery and his leadership. His commitment to his country was unwavering, and he was a source of inspiration to all who knew him. Following his distinguished military service, Lewis worked until retirement at EMI.
Lewis enjoyed camping at the Family Affair Campground with his late wife Shirley. Lewis was a great woodworker, always finding projects to do with the kids. Lewis loved going out shopping, followed by lunch at his favorite restaurant, Applebee’s, where he and his son Gary enjoyed watching football games.
Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mabel Askins; his brothers, Bernard Askins, Donald Askins, Phil Askins, and James Askins, and his sister, Cindy Askins.
He survived by his son, Gary Askins and his girlfriend, Corrine; his son, Louis Askins; his daughters, Lisa Askins, Annette Stover; his sister, Connie Burkett, and many grandkids and great grandkids
A Memorial Service will be held at the Erie County Memorial Gardens on Friday April 25, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either his son, Gary, or the funeral home to help defray final expenses and medical bills that grew high during his courageous three-year battle with dementia.
